Qualifications:
Twenty-one years of age or older
Excellent physical condition
Legal resident of the United States
No felony convictions
Have not received a dishonorable discharge or general discharge under other than honorable conditions

Training:
Upon your appointment as a Hazard Police Recruit, you will begin nine weeks of training with a Field Training Officer. Within your first year of employment, you will attend the Law Enforcement Basic Training Academy at the Department of Criminal Justice Training in Richmond Kentucky. Basic training is an intensive twenty-two week program and includes modules on:
Criminal Law
Firearms Training
Police Vehicle Operations
Patrol Procedures and Tactics
Investigative Techniques
Human Relations
Ethics
Accident Investigation
Defensive Tactics
Physical Fitness

Benefit Summary:
Sick leave is accrued at one day per month.

Safety Officer Information

Qualifications:
Must have a high school diploma/GED.
Must be 21 years of age or older .
Valid driver's license required.
Must pass a background investigation. Candidates must not have any felony convictions or serious misdemeanor convictions.
Must pass a psychological examination administered by the Department of Criminal Justice and Training, and a physical examination administered by the Hazard Police Department.
Must be able to engage in Safety Officer functions that include such things as working various shifts, walking on foot patrol, climbing stairs and pushing stalled vehicles.
Must be able to perform and directly assist in rescue operations which may involve lifting, carrying and dragging heavy objects, climbing over and pulling oneself over obstacles, jumping down from elevated surfaces, climbing through openings, jumping over obstacles, crawling in confined areas, balancing on uneven or narrow surfaces and using body force to gain entrance through barriers.
Must have a voice compatible in tone and diction with the radio and telephone systems and be able to communicate effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.
Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to develop and maintain mutually cooperative relationships with community.
Must be able to communicate with sensitivity and tact and maintain confidentiality.
Must be able to effectively give information and directions.
Must be able to prepare reports, using appropriate grammar, symbols and mathematical computations.
Must have strong typing/computer skills.
Must complete and turn in all paperwork involved in this position in a timely manner.
Must be capable of prioritizing tasks and handling a multiphasic position.
Must successfully complete a 12 - month probationary period (six months if promoted into this position) An employee transferred or promoted from a part - time to a full - time position, or an employee transferred or promoted during the first twelve months of employment with the Department, shall serve a twelve (12) month probation in the new position.

Telecommunications Officer Information

The Telecommunications Officer serves as the primary link between the public and the Police Officers in the field. You will receive emergency telephone calls and assist citizens with requests for service and general inquiries. Each call is evaluated and the appropriate Public Safety personnel are dispatched to handle the situation. Such decisions will frequently be made on an independent basis with after-the-fact supervisory review. Responsibilities also include using the Computer- Aided Dispatch (CAD), physical as well as electronic mapping systems, maintaining records, and performing typing assignments which include data entry.

Entry level Telecommunications officers will be required to perform a variety of clerical duties including, but not limited to-
Confirming warrants of arrest
Processing applicable reports and records
Operating computer terminals
Perform criminal background checks
Be expected to comprehend and be able to explain regulations regarding dispatching, record keeping, information collection, and the processing and release of information.

Request a Recruit Patrolman application packet at the Hazard Police Department lobby. Once you have completed the application, bring the application along with your drivers license, birth certificate, High School diploma or official college degree transcript, DD Form 214 (if applicable), and copy of POPS certificate (if applicable) to the Hazard Police Department located at 800 High Street in Hazard. After you submit your application in person, you may refer to your application packet for further information regarding the hiring process and testing dates.
