Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Engle - Deputy Chief
Joseph Engle has been employed with the Hazard Police Department since September of 2000. Engle was a Deputy Sheriff for the Perry County Sheriff Department prior to his employment with Hazard Police Department. While being with the Hazard Police Department Engle has twice been awarded the Meritorious Service Award for his investigations of several high profile cases resulting in convictions. In 2006 Engle was promoted to the position of Deputy Chief of Police where he assisted the department attain accreditation through the Kentucky Association of Chiefs of Police. Engle’s goals is to assure the citizens of Hazard have a professional and well trained police force which is held to the highest level of integrity.
Major James East - Administrative Officer
James East has been employed with the Department since December 15, 2003. East graduated from DOCJT in October 2004. While at the academy, East received numerous awards including “Class Leader” and “Fit for Duty”. East was promoted to Major in February of 2010. East previously supervised all patrol officers on all shifts as Operations Commander and still holds all patrol officers to a professional standard second to none in Eastern Kentucky. While with the Hazard Police Department East has received several awards including officer of the year in 2005. This award is voted on by peers of the department for outstanding performance during the year. East has also received the distinguished metal in 2006 for trying to save a life and apprehending a murder suspect. In June of 2007 East attended and graduated from the academy of police supervision at the Department of Criminal Justice Training. East has also been given the privilege of being the Department Chaplain. While this role is voluntary, East faces many issues both on a personal level and professional level. He gladly accepts this assignment so that he may be able, when given the opportunity, to help a co-worker or close family member at any time. Currently, East handles many facets of purchasing within the department and in doing so, brings forth new forms of technology for use by the department.
